NASHETAH THOMAS-EL, 17

My name is Nashetah Thomas-EL, I am 17 years old, and I am from Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania. Some of my interests include social and racial advocacy and activism, baking, singing, dancing, playing the piano, and skateboarding. All of these interests are very important to me and they all make up who I am. Over the past few years, I have discovered my passion for social and racial activism. I became an officer of a social and racial justice club (HERE Club — “HERE” standing for “Humanity in Ethnicity, Race, and Equity) at my high school before the start of my sophomore year, and through this group, I, along with the other officers and club members, have been able to make a lasting impact on our curriculum, and ultimately, our school environment. At the end of my junior year, I founded a chapter of the Black Student Union at my school, which is intended to serve as a safe space for the Black students at my high school, and a way for my school’s Black student population to connect through shared experiences. To me, “For The love of Black Girls” means being able to impact Black girls through creating love and empowerment throughout the Black girl community, as well as facilitating a Black girl’s love for themselves, and doing everything you can to make that happen. This phrase heavily applies to why I create the spaces that I do inside and outside of school.
