VIRTUAL SUMMER CAMP

JOY FOR BLACK GIRLS.

(joy: the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation.)

This is a two-week summer camp for Black middle school girls (who will be headed to grades 6-9) beginning on Monday, July 18 and concluding on Thursday, July 28, under the banner of the UYS Academy (UYSA). Black middle school-aged girls will participate in one Summer Love & Learning Lab Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Each morning will begin with games hosted by our GXC Leaders.

juLY 18 - July 28
(MONDAYS - THURSDAYS)

The FOR THE LOVE OF BLACK GIRLS® Summer Camp is a two-week virtual experience rooted in the joys of Black Girlhood. While the work that we do will always center our commitments to Black girls, this experience in particular is strictly focused on the unique joys that come with being a Black girl when Black girls get to be young girls. Our intention is to educe joy and multiply it.

Week 2: July 25 - 28, 2022

We want to give Black girls the opportunity to just BE young girls. Black girls deserve that. BLACK GIRLS ARE CHILDREN TOO. And they have a right to their childhood. The FOR THE LOVE OF BLACK GIRLS Summer Camp is a place for Black girls to have and experience joy. The joy that comes with being a child.

BLACK GIRLS ARE CHILDREN TOO.

According to Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls’ Childhood, Black girls are viewed “as less innocent and more adult-like than white girls of the same age, especially between 5–14 years old.” When compared with white girls, Black girls were perceived as:

  • needing less nurturing, protection, support and comfort;

  • being more independent; and

  • knowing more about adult topics, including sex.

THE ABOVE IS CONSIDERED: the ADULTIFICATION of black girls.
